Iraqi, Indian and German experts to lead lectures and classes
Three leaders from the Middle East and Europe with expertise in international affairs, security, negotiation, trade and diplomacy will join the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy for the spring 2014 semester.
Mowaffak Baker al Rubaie is an Iraqi statesman who previously was national security advisor to four Iraqi administrations, from 2004 to 2009, and was a member of Iraq’s Council of Representatives from 2009 to 2010. In his role as senior statesman-in-residence at Fletcher, in partnership with the Institute for Global Leadership (IGL) at Tufts, al Rubaie will organize lectures and create opportunities for engagement with undergraduate and graduate students.
He will be a presenter at the 2014 EPIIC Symposium: The Future of the Middle East and North Africa. In addition, al Rubaie will give the keynote address for a four-part lecture series co-hosted by the Fletcher School’s International Security Studies Program and IGL, and will lead lectures on international business organized by Fletcher’s Institute for Business in the Global Context.
Also joining the Fletcher School this spring as an adjunct professor of international business is Harsha Vardhana Singh, who will be teaching the course Doing Business in India. Singh was deputy director general of the World Trade Organization from 2005 to 2013, and previously was secretary of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. The course will draw on Singh’s three decades of experience working on international trade and trade policy, regulation and opening the infrastructure sector to competition.
Fletcher will welcome back for the third year German Ambassador Klaus Scharioth, who will teach a course on U.S.-European Relations since the Fall of the Berlin Wall in his role as professor of the practice. Scharioth, F73, F74, F78, served as German ambassador to the U.S. from 2006 to 2011, and was state secretary of the German foreign office from 2002 to 2006.
