Alumni are serving in 19 countries, from Belize to Swaziland
Tufts University is ranked among the top 10 colleges of its size for the number of alumni serving as Peace Corps volunteers in 2014.
The Peace Corps ranks the top volunteer-producing colleges and universities annually based on the size of the student body. This year, Tufts ranked ninth among medium-sized schools, those with between 5,000 and 15,000 undergraduates. Tufts is at the low end of that range, with 5,255 undergrads.
Also included in the top 10 are American University, Boston College, Cornell University, Georgetown University, George Washington University, the University of Idaho, the University of Vermont, the University of Virginia and Western Washington University.
Twenty-four Tufts alumni are currently volunteering in 19 countries: Belize, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, China, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guyana, Jamaica, Jordan, Kenya, the Kyrgyz Republic, Madagascar, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Senegal and Swaziland.
“Within my community, I have constructed a library at a local primary school and am starting a reading tutoring program using my secondary school students as volunteers to work with the primary school students,” says Eric Wilburn, E12, who is serving in Mozambique.
Since the Peace Corps was founded in 1961, 541 Tufts alumni have served.
