Commencement 2016: Photo Gallery - Melody Chapin, G16

As a student at Somerville High School, Melody Chapin, G16, used to play on the Tufts tennis courts, never imagining that she would one day attend the university. She loved music and theater and went on to earn an undergraduate degree in voice performance from the University of New Hampshire.

That set the stage for a career path that led her back home, to Somerville, and to Tufts, where she earned a master’s in musicology in May. She wrote her thesis on music, culture and identity in Brazil and Latin America. She studied at the University of São Paulo in Brazil on a Fulbright grant in 2012, focusing on the performance and diction technique of Brazilian Art Song. She is also interested in the issues of accessibility of Latin American and Iberian art music—including the detective and diplomatic work necessary for publishing music still under copyright—as well as in English poetic translation from the Spanish and Portuguese languages.

She’s spending the summer hanging out with her husband, Jeff Berkembrock, her high school sweetheart, and their cat, Rosie, and taking voice lessons. The break won’t last long. They’re moving to Providence, Rhode Island, this fall so that Chapin can begin a doctoral program in ethnomusicology at Brown University.
