The day dawned crisp and cool in Hopkinton, Mass., the starting point for the 115th Boston Marathon on April 18. Approximately 200 members of the Tufts President’s Marathon Challenge ran the 26.2-mile course for the ninth consecutive year.
Students, staff, faculty, alumni, family and friends from across the country trained together under the guidance of Coach Don Megerle and raised money in support of nutrition, medical and fitness programs at Tufts. The challenge, the brainchild of Tufts President Lawrence S. Bacow, has raised nearly $3 million since its inception.
Members of the Tufts community also turned out along the route, cheering the team and handing out water.
The top male finisher for the Tufts team was Dan Hatfield, N11, with a time of 3:16:19, and the top female finisher was Juliana Slocum, A11, who ran a 3:25:27.
This year, we captured the energy and excitement of the race via comments made on Twitter by the Tufts community. We also recruited four Tufts staff members from University Advancement—President’s Marathon Challenge runners Shane Dunn and Rebecca Scott and volunteers Kayla Lane and Laura McLaughlin, A08—to share their tweets leading up to and during race day.
