Tufts University Named to President's Honor Roll for Community Service

MEDFORD/SOMERVILLE, Mass. -- The Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency, has named Tufts University to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its exemplary volunteer service.

Launched in 2006, the Community Service Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service and civic engagement. Honorees that were named to the honor roll were chosen based on scope and innovation of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service and the extent to which the school offers academic service learning courses.

Tufts was selected because of its broad array of community-based work, including the Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service which helps all Tufts students partner with communities and develop skills to become active leaders; the Tufts Leonard Carmichael Society, which pairs student volunteers and coordinators with programs serving at-risk children and youth; and Jumpstart, which partners students with low-income, preschool and K-8 children to help them build literacy, language and social skills

In addition, students from Tufts' School of Dental Medicine provided more than 10,000 hours of volunteer service at community health centers, prisons and military sites in Massachusetts and nine other states.

"Tufts University’s outstanding commitment to producing active, engaged, and effective citizens is demonstrated by the existence of a unique college that works across Tufts schools to prepare students from every field to be lifelong active citizens," said Rob Hollister, dean of the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service. "At Tisch College, we are proud to lead this work and to collaborate with Tufts schools, departments, and student groups to engage every member of the Tufts community."

Tufts was one of 33 Massachusetts institutions honored by the Corporation for National and Community Service. A full list of all schools recognized is available at http://www.learnandserve.gov/about/programs/higher_ed_honorroll.asp
