Tufts Near Top in Student-Teacher Ratio

University ranked number three out of 24 Massachusetts colleges and universities

Tufts has the third-lowest student-teacher ratio among Massachusetts colleges and universities with enrollments of more than 5,000 students, according to the Online College Database.

With an enrollment of 11,451 undergraduate, graduate and professional students, Tufts boasts a nine-to-one student-teacher ratio, according to the ranking of 24 of the state’s colleges and universities. The schools rated had to be accredited, four-year, degree-granting institutions that enroll at least 5,000 students and have a student-teacher ratio of less than 20-to-one.

Harvard and MIT edge out Tufts for the number one and two spots, respectively, with ratios of seven-to-one and eight-to-one.

“Many larger institutions [like Tufts] go the extra mile to maximize personal attention, maintaining smaller classrooms and fostering regular professor-student interaction,” says Wes Ricketts, vice president and general manager of the Online College Database, a nonprofit that provides free information about higher education in Massachusetts for prospective students and others.
