Softball, men’s lacrosse and Mitchell Black, A16, win NCAA titles

Tufts softball seniors with NCAA trophy

Tufts athletes had a monumental Memorial Day weekend, as the softball team won its third straight national championship, an NCAA record, while the men’s lacrosse team won its second consecutive NCAA championship and track star Mitchell Black won the NCAA outdoor 800 meters.

Finishing a perfect 51-0 season in dramatic fashion on May 25, the Tufts softball team won its third consecutive championship with a 7-4 victory over the University of Texas at Tyler in Salem, Virginia. The Jumbos are the first Division III softball team to win three straight, and also set the record for consecutive wins. Read the full story here.

The Tufts men’s lacrosse team earned a hard-fought 19-11 victory against Lynchburg College on May 24, winning the championship for the second straight year and third time overall in a game played at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. They ended the season 21-2. It was the Jumbos fourth appearance in the NCAA final, including 2010, when they also won. Read the full story here.

Black, A16, proved he is the undisputed king of the 800 meters in NCAA Division III after winning the outdoor 800 title on May 23 at St. Lawrence University. Black, a member of the Tufts men’s track and field team, added the victory to the NCAA indoor 800 crown he won back in March. Read the full story here.
