The ranking is based on patents granted in the United States during 2017
Tufts University is one of the most inventive universities in the world, according to a new ranking compiled by the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) and the Intellectual Property Owners Association (IPO).
Tufts ranked 70th on the list of Top 100 Worldwide Universities Granted U.S. Patents in 2017 [PDF], based on data obtained from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The rank marked an improvement of fifteen places over last year’s report.
“Our ranking is a reflection of our very innovative faculty and students, the university’s strategic commitment to entrepreneurship, and its ongoing support for inventorship and innovation,” said Simin Nikbin
Meydani, Tufts vice provost for research. “We’re committed to promoting a culture of discovery at Tufts that hastens innovations that will make the world a better place. Our goal always is to be an engine for good.”
The NAI and IPO have published their report annually since 2013 to highlight the vital role patents play in university research and innovation. The report ranks the top one hundred universities named as the first assignee on utility patents granted by the USPTO during the 2017 calendar year.
According to the rankings, Tufts had thirty-seven patents in 2017; four of the patents were assigned to Tufts Medical Center, according to the report.
The NAI is a member organization that works to enhance the visibility of academic technology and innovation and encourages the disclosure of intellectual property. It is comprised of U.S. and international universities and governmental and nonprofit research institutes, with more than 4,000 individual inventor members and fellows spanning more than 250 institutions.
The IPO is a trade association for owners of patents, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets, and advocates for effective and affordable IP ownership rights.
