Jumbo sports teams are cheered on to success by students and alumni
Crowds of students and alumni gathered over Homecoming Weekend and were rewarded with a burst of top-notch athletic performances—and a big helping of Jumbo pride. Beautiful early fall weather certainly helped, too.
On Saturday, the Jumbos took to the gridiron against conference rivals Bates. Down 14-10 at the half, the football team exploded for 37 unanswered points in the second half to take a 47-14 win. The Jumbos gained 545 yards of total offense, including 316 on the ground as they improved to 3-0.
At Ounjian Field, the nationally third-ranked Tufts field hockey team beat conference opponent and number sixteen Amherst 3-2 in overtime Saturday afternoon, and came back the next day to take on Hamilton College. Junior Rachel Hamilton scored the game-winning goal Sunday and led the Jumbos to a 2-1. With the win, the Jumbos improve to 8-0 on the season and 5-0 in conference play. Head coach Tina Mattera set a milestone collecting her 200th win for Tufts, in her fifteenth season.

Tufts women’s soccer scored in the first thirty seconds at Kraft Field on Sunday, but Hamilton College knotted it up later in the first half, leading to a 1-1 draw in conference action. The day before, Amherst College bested the Jumbos 3-0.
The nationally third-ranked Tufts men’s soccer wrapped up Homecoming weekend with a down-to-the-wire 1-0 victory over conference opponent Hamilton College in front of the Jumbo faithful at Bello Field on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Jumbo senior defenseman Jackson Najjar lofted a pass down the right sideline for junior forward Joe Braun, who blasted the ball past the Continental goaltender for the difference-maker. The Jumbos are now 9-0-0.
