School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts to hold annual art sale Nov. 15-18

Largest contemporary art sale in New England, with unique works by alumni, faculty and friends, supports student financial aid at SMFA at Tufts

Art Sale 2017

BOSTON and MEDFORD/SOMERVILLE, Mass. (Nov. 1, 2018)—The School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University will host its annual art sale from November 15 – 18, 2018, with an opening reception to be held Nov. 15 from 5:30 - 8 p.m. The sale, held on the SMFA at Tufts campus at 230 Fenway in Boston, offers nearly 2,500 works by almost 600 SMFA at Tufts students, alumni, faculty and friends.

Among the artists involved in this year's sale are SMFA at Tufts alumna Laurel Nakadate, who New York Times critic Ken Johnson called "unusually gripping," and Ethan Murrow, SMFA at Tufts professor of the practice, whose current exhibition, "Hauling," is on view at the Currier Museum of Art.

The sale is SMFA at Tufts' biggest fundraiser, with between 50 percent and 100 percent of the proceeds of each sale supporting student financial aid and other creative resources for art students at the school. Last year, more than 4,000 patrons visited the sale.

The selection of works available for purchase is constantly refreshed as pieces are sold, so each visit to the sale is unique. The artworks include paintings, drawings, photographs, sculpture, prints, video, ceramics and jewelry. Large-scale outdoor art installations will also be available for purchase this year, on display in the front courtyard. The sale also includes a pop-up jewelry shop and an assortment of unframed works in bins, both very popular with visitors.

This year's sale – the 36th annual – kicks off on Thursday, Nov. 15, at 11 a.m., followed by a public reception from 5:30 – 8 p.m. that evening. The sale ends at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 18.

A VIP reception for participating artists and supporters, open to the media, will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 13, from 6 – 9 p.m. Members of the media interested in attending must register in advance by contacting Robin Smyton via email at robin.smyton@tufts.edu or by phone at 617-627-5392.

Admission to the opening reception and the sale are free.

The 2018 art sale is sponsored by Stanhope Framers, U.S. Art, Around the Corner, Boston Design Center and Horizon Beverages.
