Tufts junior Talia Toland, E21, won the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association Single-handed Championship over the weekend at the Yale Corinthian Yacht Club in Branford, Connecticut.

The win advances Toland to the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Single-handed Nationals coming up November 9-10 in Santa Barbara, California.

Racing on Saturday, September 14 and Sunday, September 15 for the New England title, Toland led after Saturday’s seven races with a 15 score. Competing in an eleven-woman field, she finished first in three of Saturday’s seven races and had three second place finishes. She wrapped up the championship with a victory, and two third-place finishes among Sunday’s four races to end with a final total of 29.

Toland finished nine points ahead of Boston College junior Sophia Reineke, who placed second with a 38 score.

Toland was the runner-up at this event as a first year in 2017 and finished seventh last year. She went to nationals in 2017 and placed twelfth.

“It feels great to be New England champion, especially after competing with many of these girls since high school,” said Toland. “New England is one of the most competitive districts and it feels great to come away with a win.

“Because the fleet was small but competitive this weekend, it was key to have consistently top-three finishes and always fight back for every boat,” she said. “Keeping a level head and sailing fast were two contributing factors to my sailing consistently.”

Tufts sophomore Alexandra Talbot, E22, also qualified for the national championship with her sixth-place finish at the event; the top six in New England will move on. Talbot had a score of 68, including a second-place finish in the ninth start and a third in the fourth.

Four Jumbos raced in the New England Championship overall. In addition to Toland and Talbot, Annika Fedde, A23, was seventh (73) and Abbie Carlson, A22, was tenth (93).
