Speakers include activists, academics, filmmakers, two U.S. representatives, and an Emmy and Peabody award-winning journalist
The Tisch College of Civic Life, celebrating its twentieth anniversary this year, brings leaders, innovators, and activists to Tufts to talk about their work and engage with students and members of the community.
The spring semester’s lineup includes figures such as U.S. Representative Joe Kennedy III, Chris Wallace, and Cyntoia Brown-Long, with topics ranging from the history of the civil rights movement to the state of the 2020 presidential race.
Many of these events will be hosted in Tisch College’s new home, a renovated Barnum Hall.

Tisch College Distinguished Speaker Series: Cyntoia Brown-Long
Thursday, March 5 | 6 p.m. | Breed Memorial Hall, 51 Winthrop Street
At sixteen years old, Cyntoia Brown-Long became a victim of sex trafficking, and was later arrested for killing a man who solicited her for sex. She was tried as an adult despite her age and was sentenced to life in prison without parole for fifty-one years. After ten years in prison, during which she obtained two university degrees, got married, and embraced religion, Brown-Long appealed for clemency. Her sentence was commuted to fifteen years, and she was released from prison in August of 2019. Today she works with advocates for juvenile sentencing reform through the Foundation for Justice, Freedom and Mercy, and has just published a memoir of her time in prison, Free Cyntoia: My Search for Redemption in the American Prison System.

Edward R. Murrow Forum on Issues in Journalism: Chris Wallace

A prominent political commentator and a highly respected journalist, Chris Wallace has been in the broadcasting industry for more than fifty years and has worked at most of the major networks. He is currently the anchor of FOX News Sunday, prior to which Wallace was a senior correspondent for Primetime Thursday and substitute for Nightline at ABC News, covered several presidential elections at NBC News as the network’s chief White House correspondent, and was a print reporter at the Boston Globe. Wallace is the recipient of three Emmy Awards and a Peabody Award for his reporting.
