Virtual art gallery showcases up-and-coming artists

BOSTON and MEDFORD/SOMERVILLE, Mass. (May 26, 2020)—The School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University (SMFA at Tufts) is celebrating its graduating art students in the class of 2020 with two spring exhibitions. To enable visitors to safely experience the art, the shows will be hosted virtually on the SMFA at Tufts website, and are free and open to the public.

These students will have the opportunity to show their work in person when it is safe for gallery spaces to open to the public.

Graduating master's degree candidates will present their work at the Master's Thesis Exhibition posted online on June 1. This year's show is titled "As Above, So Below,” named by the MFA students. The art presented at this show is the result of two years of students' close research and production with SMFA at Tufts faculty to develop their vision and shape the future of their careers as working artists. The variety of works include painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture and installations and video.

A virtual reception celebrating the master's thesis candidates and their work will be held on June 4 at 6:30 p.m.

The SMFA at Tufts' Senior Thesis Exhibition, titled "Outrageous Plans for Sensible Ideas,” features art created by 14 senior Bachelor of Fine Arts and combined degree students participating in the SMFA at Tufts thesis program. The paintings, printmaking, video, sculptures and installations of 14 graduating thesis students are critiqued by a panel of SMFA at Tufts faculty, including their thesis advisors. The show appeared online on May 17, the same day as the degree conferral for the Tufts Class of 2020.

SMFA at Tufts will hold its commencement ceremony for the Class of 2020 with the rest of the Tufts community when it is safe for the graduates and their families and friends to gather and celebrate together.
