J.B. Lyon, A85, and Tom Bendheim, A85, established the award to celebrate leaders who are making a difference and to connect them with students and alumni on campus. The award’s inaugural recipient is Wilnelia Rivera, an activist, political strategist and Tufts alumna. Rivera is the founder and president of Rivera Consulting, Inc., a consulting firm for movement-building and policy-driven causes, candidates, and organizations. Her career has included training community organizers in Chicago and pushing for crucial reforms to the CORI database and inclusivity for LGBTQ+ students in Greater Boston. As a political strategist, Rivera was instrumental in helping to elect Deval Patrick as Massachusetts’ first Black governor and Ayanna Pressley as a U.S. Congresswoman.

U.S. Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi (D-CA12) serves as the 52nd Speaker of the House of Representatives, after making history in 2007 when she was elected the first woman to serve in that role. For the past 34 years, Pelosi has helped to pass key legislation like the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the Affordable Care Act, and the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, as well as hate crimes legislation, key investments in college aid, and legislation to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” In 2013, Pelosi was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls, the birthplace of the American women’s rights movement. A strong proponent of service, she has been a powerful voice for civil rights and human rights around the world.

Anthony Fauci has been one of the leading figures in America’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since 1984, Fauci has served as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at the U.S. National Institutes of Health, where he oversees an extensive research portfolio focused on infectious and immune-mediated diseases. He has advised seven U.S. presidents on HIV/AIDS and other domestic and global health issues, and he was one of the principal architects of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a program that has saved millions of lives throughout the developing world. Fauci is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Stacey Abrams is an activist, entrepreneur, author and political leader. For 11 years, including seven as minority leader, Abrams served in the Georgia House of Representatives. In 2018, she was the Democratic nominee for governor of Georgia, making her the first Black woman to become the gubernatorial nominee for a major party in the United States. After a hotly contested gubernatorial election, Abrams launched Fair Fight to ensure every Georgian has a voice in the state’s election system and Fair Fight 2020, an initiative to fund and train voter protection teams in 20 battleground states.

Michael Steele is an MSNBC political analyst and former chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC). Steele currently serves as senior advisor for the Lincoln Project, a bipartisan coalition built in opposition to Donald Trump, and as a political analyst for MSNBC. Under Steele’s leadership, the RNC broke fundraising records, picked up a then-unprecedented 63 seats in the House of Representatives, and invested in grassroots organizing and party building at the state and local levels. Steele has also made history twice. In 2003 when he was the first Black person elected to statewide office as lieutenant governor of Maryland, and again in 2009 when he was named the first Black chair of the RNC.
