The senior biology major recalls finding at Tufts both the desired opportunities to conduct biomedical research as well as a powerful sense of community, with faculty mentors and fellow students alike
Jay M. Fonticella is hopeful that the research that they have conducted as a biology student may one day lead to therapeutics for the craniofacial defects like cleft palates are all too common at birth and for which no cures currently exist. An important part of Jay's success as a member of the Tufts Class of 2022? A deeply supportive community of peers and faculty members with whom they have been able to find common experience and shared identities. Those relationships went a long way in making biology accessible to a first-generation college student who grew up never seeing themselves represented in the STEM disciplines while in high school.
