Why Getting More People to Vote Makes the Nation Stronger

Convincing Americans—especially the young and the marginalized—to cast their ballots is essential to the health of our democracy

Barely 50 percent of eligible Americans vote in a presidential election year, far lower than the turnout in many other democratic countries. Why should we worry? According to experts at the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life, if only a segment of society is making decisions for everyone, our laws and policies won’t reflect the needs of many Americans, hurting their chances of becoming the productive citizens that help a nation thrive.
