The Green Line Extension (GLX) project provides expanded ridership service to Somerville, Cambridge, and Medford by extending the existing MBTA Green Line service northwest of Lechmere Station.
The project involved constructing six new Green Line stations—at Medford/Tufts, Ball Square, Magoun Square, Gilman Square, and East Somerville, where a new Green Line D branch extension now connects riders to a new Union Square station)—plus the relocation and reconstruction of Lechmere station.
According to the MBTA, GLX is expected to support an increased ridership of more than 45,000 trips per day while significantly reducing vehicle emissions.
The MBTA also has accommodated foot traffic with a Common Path project. The path runs along the Green Line from Lechmere Station to Magoun Square (at Lowell Street, Somerville), bringing the total length of Somerville’s bicycle and pedestrian path to just under two miles.
