Tisch College Announces Events for Spring 2023

Speakers include activists, authors, faith leaders, and the former president of Costa Rica

The Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life will host leaders in activism, faith work, community politics, public art, and climate change mitigation for campus events this semester.

Featured speakers include Bishop William J. Barber II, former Costa Rican President Carlos Alvarado Quesada, and author Dahlia Lithwick, among others.

Climate Leadership and the Role of Small States with President Carlos Alvarado Quesada

Join Tisch College and The Fletcher School for an intimate conversation on climate leadership with Carlos Alvarado Quesada, former president of Costa Rica, and Alnoor Ebrahim, professor of management at The Fletcher School and the Tisch College of Civic Life. Large countries like China, the United States, and India dominate the climate change conversation and carbon dioxide emission levels, but small state countries are disproportionately vulnerable to climate changes’ effects. What’s the role of small states in climate change mitigation efforts, and how do we prioritize the unique challenges they face and learn from their innovative solutions using Costa Rica’s leadership as an example?

2023 Lyon and Bendheim Citizenship Award Lecture: Championing LGBTQ+ Health and Inclusion

Lunn will be awarded the 2023 Lyon and Bendheim Citizenship Award as part of this lecture. Reception to follow. The Lyon and Bendheim Citizenship Award celebrates individuals, groups, or institutions affiliated with Tufts University that have shown a commitment to civic engagement through successful initiatives, creative solutions, or bold leadership. J.B. Lyon, A85, and Tom Bendheim, A85, established the award to celebrate leaders who are making a difference and to connect them with students and alumni on campus.

Solomont Speaker Series Dahlia Lithwick and Lady Justice: Women, the Law, and the Battle to Save America

In her recent New York Times best-selling book, Lady Justice: Women, the Law, and the Battle to Save America, author and Supreme Court reporter Dahlia Lithwick uplifts these women’s stories and achievements from the birth of Trumpism to the death of Roe v. Wade. Join a conversation with Lithwick to discuss Lady Justicethe mobilization of women in the law during the Trump Era, and what it means to be a citizen activist. A book signing will immediately follow the conclusion of the event at 6:30 p.m. in the mezzanine area outside ASEAN Auditorium. Copies of Lady Justice will be available for purchase.

Solomont Speaker Series Bishop William J. Barber II 

Thursday, April 13 | 5:30 p.m. ET | Breed Memorial Hall, 51 Winthrop Street

Join Tisch College for a lecture and conversation with renowned orator, moral leader, civic rights activist, and organizer Bishop William J. Barber II, D.Min., on organizing for multiracial democracy. Bishop Barber will discuss our individual and collective power to effect change on issues like systemic racism, poverty, and climate change at a time of historic demographic transition by breaking through divisions and centering solidarity.

Barber is a professor in the practice of public theology and public policy and founding director of the newly established Center for Public Theology and Public Policy at Yale Divinity School. He serves as founder and president of Repairers of the Breach; co-chair of the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call For Moral Revival which is a modern resurgence of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s final campaign; and is the architect of the Forward Together Moral Monday Movement that gained national acclaim in 2013 with its Moral Monday protests. Barber is pastor of Greenleaf Christian Church in Goldsboro, North Carolina, where he has preached for 30 years.
