Tisch College Announces Events for Fall 2023

Speakers include a Pulitzer Prize-winner, a governor, and a rapper/activist

The Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life will host events this semester with an award-winning journalist, visionary artists, and groundbreaking public servants, including the youngest representative currently serving in Congress.

Featured guests include journalist and author Jodi Kantor, New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell, U.S. Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.), physician and public health advocate Jim O’Connell, and rapper and activist Dee-1, among others. Dee-1 is also Tisch College’s inaugural Alan Solomont Scholar/Artist-in-Residence.

Additionally, Tisch College will co-host a Tufts Day of Service, capping off a week of events celebrating President Sunil Kumar’s October inauguration.

All events take place on Tufts’ Medford/Somerville campus unless otherwise noted. Some events allow for remote viewing and participation.

Civic Life Lunch—Who Tells Her Story?: Hidden Stories of Historic Women

Stories of women, particularly women from marginalized groups, are underrepresented in the historical record and modern media. Learn from Julie Dobrow, senior lecturer, and Jennifer Burton, professor of the practice, how Half the History, a new digital humanities project, aims to change that.

Student Meet and Greet with Dee-1, Artist/Scholar-in-Residence

Meet Tisch College’s inaugural Artist-in-Residence: renowned rapper, educator, and activist Dee-1. Get to know Dee over lunch and hear about the innovative work he will be doing at Tufts, including his highly anticipated spring course. Lunch provided.

Tufts Inauguration 2023: Day of Service

Celebrate Tufts’ new president with service, food from local businesses, and raffle prizes. Join President Sunil Kumar and the Tufts community for breakfast and remarks before heading off to community sites nearby for clean-up activities.

Jodi Kantor, the Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times reporter and best-selling author of She Said, recounts breaking the story of three decades of sexual abuse allegations against Harvey Weinstein in 2017 and helping to ignite the #MeToo movement.

Andrea Joy Campbell, the first woman of color to serve as attorney general of Massachusetts, will discuss her first year as the commonwealth’s top lawyer, fighting for criminal legal reform and advocating for Massachusetts’ most vulnerable.

Civic Life Lunch—From Vet Care to Pet Fees: Race, Equity, and Pet Perception

Meet the first Gen-Z member of Congress, Rep. Maxwell Alejandro Frost (D-Fla.). A survivor of gun violence and the former national organizing director for March for Our Lives, Frost will talk about his legislative priorities, representing a new generation in Congress, and the power of youth activism.
