Congratulations to our 2024 Honos Civicus Honorees

The Friedman School continues to partner with The Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life to recognize graduating Friedman School students for their civic engagement and community service.

The Honos Civicus Society, launched in 2009 and managed by Tisch College, is a way for us to celebrate and reflect upon our commitment to civic engagement. We believe that Friedman School students are not only passionate about food and health, but about making an impact through public service. Honos Civicus, Latin for “Civic Honors”, celebrates and publicly recognizes graduating students who have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to active citizenship during their studies. Congratulations to our 2024 Honos Civicus honorees!

Rowan Bishop

Rowan has focused on nutrition interventions, communication, and behavior change during her time as a student at the Friedman School and Simmons University. She is involved with fitness and athletics and has used the skills she has learned to encourage more youth to participate in sports. Specifically, she has dedicated her time as a youth track and field coach, specializing in sprints and hurdles to get more urban youth, particularly females, involved in the track and field event in Boston Public Schools. Over the summer, she worked with the New Entry Sustainable Farming Project on communication and volunteer coordination. During this time, she worked closely with local farmers and other interns to create spaces that were up to date, promoted food safety and quality, and were easily accessible to all. After graduation, she will be a dietetic intern at Massachusetts General Hospital, pursuing a career as a registered dietitian nutritionist.

Sarah Diamond

Sarah graduated from the dual MS/MPH program in December 2023. She is a functional nutritionist who is passionate about addressing and advocating for both the physiological and societal root causes of chronic disease. This has included founding and running her own business, Finding Ground Functional Nutrition, which has helped over 85 people reclaim their health while restoring a healthy relationship with food. She has always utilized a sliding scale system to ensure that anyone can get the support they need. Sarah has also volunteered with Project Heal, which helps under-represented groups access eating disorder treatment, she has served on the Community Servings Young Leaders board, and has presented her work at two professional conferences during her time at Tufts. Sarah completed her Public Health Applied Learning Experience at The Food Trust in Philadelphia, working to enhance Produce Prescription Programs across the city to get healthy food to people who need it. Sarah currently lives in San Francisco, where she plans to work in public health nutrition initiatives while keeping her entrepreneurial spirit alive.

Calvin Tran

As a dual-degree student at the Friedman School and School of Medicine focusing on Nutrition Interventions, Communication, and Behavior Change (NICBC) and Population Health Promotion (PHP), respectively, Calvin has centered his studies around malnutrition and food security among older adults. Being civically engaged and serving his communities has always been a priority. Prior to beginning his studies, he recently completed service years with AmeriCorps in Tulsa, OK, and Chicago, IL. When beginning his degree, he sought opportunities to continue engaging in service by becoming a Boston Area Health Education Scholar for the Boston Public Health Commission, which provided mentorship for high school students exploring the healthcare field,  and an Academic Public Health Corps Member within the partnered collaboration between MA Department of Public Health, MA Health Officers Association, MA Public Health Association, and 13 academic institutions, and supported local health departments with public health-related projects. Currently, he has extended his Tisch Summer Fellowship with FriendshipWorks, an organization focused on reducing social isolation among older adults, where his project focuses on evaluating and identifying possible educational enhancements for their Medical Escort program. After graduation in May, Calvin plans to pursue a career in local public health or research focused on aging and older adults.
