From Northern Lights and rainbows to marriage proposals and the marathon, the most-liked Tufts Instagram posts of 2024

Each year, Tufts photographers, community members, and visitors alike make and share photos that tell the stories of the university and its people through different lenses.

As Tufts Now wraps up 2024, we are highlighting some of the top photos that were shared on the university’s Instagram this year. Whether taken on campus or around the world, they tell unique parts of the university’s story.

Here are the top 10 Instagram posts, based on the number of likes each photo got from the @TuftsUniversity audiences.

Northern Lights

In mid-October, for the second time this calendar year, the Northern Lights were visible across the skies of Tufts’ campuses, showing off beautiful shades of green, purple, pink, and red. Add in some easily recognized university sights, and you have the perfect recipe for a successful social post.

Cannon Proposal

Painting the famous cannon on the Medford/Somerville campus, a replica of the cannon found on the USS Constitution, has long been a tradition of Tufts students and student organizations. In the first weeks of 2024, this marriage proposal appeared, with Instagram audiences left wondering if “F.B.” ever said yes. Spoiler: We’re still waiting to hear…

Boston Marathon

The third Monday in April is Marathon Monday. Under the leadership of longtime coach Don Megerle, a team of 15 Jumbo students, staff, and alumni swapped out their traditional Tufts brown and blue attire for the more recognizable yellow and blue gear of the Tufts Marathon Team. Together with the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, this year’s marathon team helped raise funds to address crucial issues in food and nutrition.

While sports enthusiasts from around the world tuned in to watch their favorite athletes compete in the Summer Olympic Games, those from Tufts may have recognized a few local faces who were also competing. This year, David Liebenberg, E14, and Jesse Grupper, E19, made their Olympic debuts in Paris, proudly representing the U.S. sailing team and U.S. climbing team, respectively. They joined current student Alex Flynn, who won a silver medal as a member of the Team USA Paralympic rowing team. Photo: David Liebenberg

“Snow Much Fun”

When students returned for the spring semester, they were greeted with a gift from Mother Nature—a campus covered in a fresh layer of snow. What resulted was some beautiful moments captured by Tufts photographers of students experiencing the snow, some for the first time ever.

Like so many community members, the Tufts social team loves seeing pictures that show puppies visiting campus. Add some Tufts-inspired memorabilia to their outfit, and you’re guaranteed to bump up the “likes.”

Say It Ain’t Spring

As any local knows, it takes a while for the campus to fully change from winter to spring, and this past year was no different. The first day of spring 2024 had us reminiscing about what the Medford/Somerville campus would look like once spring was truly in the air. Trust us, it did eventually look like this!

Happy Halloween!

Jumbos kicked off Halloween weekend this year with a stop at Gifford House for all treats (and no tricks!) with President Sunil Kumar. Students, including some who were dressed for the occasion, enjoyed snacks, candy, and conversation before heading out to other events.

Welcome to Tufts, New Jumbos

There is always something special about arriving on campus for the first time. Whether the highlight is meeting your new roommates, setting up your new space, or just leaving home for the first time, we captured those feelings during the official first-year move-in day as members of the Class of 2028 began their Tufts journey.

Over the Rainbow

So much conversation in the social space this fall was about the new film, Wicked, based on the novel written by Tufts alum Gregory Maguire. Was it fate then that this rainbow, captured by a campus visitor on the same day the film was released, shined over the Medford/Somerville campus? Like the ending to the film, we’ll have to wait and see.
