We are thrilled to announce the recipients of the 2025 Friedman School Alumni Association Awards. These distinguished individuals embody the school's mission, contribute significantly to the field of nutrition science and policy, and represent the excellence of our alumni community. Selected from nominations submitted by faculty, staff and alumni, these awards are the highest honors presented by the Alumni Association.

Sameera Talegawkar, Ph.D., NG06

Excellence in Nutrition Award

Dr. Sameera Talegawkar is recognized for making an incredible impact as a trailblazer in health equity and nutrition science. Her groundbreaking leadership as Chair of the Health Equity Working Group within the 2025 DGAC has set a historic precedent by formally addressing health equity for the first time in the committee’s 45-year history. Dr. Talegawkar's dedication to advancing research in healthy aging, spanning pivotal studies such as the Jackson Heart Study and MASALA, has not only enriched the field but also earned her the admiration of peers worldwide. Supported by esteemed organizations, Dr. Talegawkar's work continues to drive meaningful change throughout the field of nutrition. 

Ahmad Shakeb, F18, N18

Leah Horowitz Humanitarian Award

Ahmad Shakeb is recognized for his unwavering commitment to ensuring that the most vulnerable populations receive life-saving aid during crises is remarkable. His leadership in Afghanistan, including negotiating with the Taliban to secure access to aid and designing impactful programs, exemplifies his courage and dedication. Even after facing the challenges of fleeing Afghanistan, Ahmad continued to demonstrate incredible resilience by leading individuals to safety and supporting them during refuge. Ahmad's legacy of service, advocacy, and unwavering dedication to humanity is an inspiration.

Alison Brown, Ph.D., NG17

Rising Star Award

Dr. Alison Brown is recognized for her incredible leadership and impact in advancing health disparities research and addressing social determinants of cardiovascular health. Dr. Brown's groundbreaking initiatives at NHLBI, such as co-chairing the NIH Nutrition and Health Disparities Implementation Working Group and leading the NHLBI Nutrition Research Implementation Plan, has transformed nutrition research and inspired global engagement, as seen in the success of her 2021 workshop. Beyond Dr. Brown's federal leadership, her dedication to diversifying the nutrition profession and mentoring future leaders exemplifies profound commitment to equity and progress. Dr. Brown's work is truly transformative, shaping the future of health equity and nutrition science.
