Uncertain Futures for Local Farmers

The Boston Globe recently highlighted how some small farms are being impacted by abrupt changes in funding

The Boston Globe has published a feature article on Hannan Healthy Foods Farm, a small farm whose biggest buyer has historically been the New Entry Sustainable Farming Project Food Hub, which is affiliated with the Friedman School. Funded by federal grants, New Entry's Food Hub helps to connect local farmers with local consumers, including schools, food banks, and senior centers.

Recently, the Trump administration abruptly ended programs including food grants, climate initiatives, and land-purchase support, many of which were tied to the 2018 Farm Bill. These cuts disrupted ongoing projects and left struggling farmers financially burdened by commitments made in anticipation of funding that was later revoked.

Director Jennifer Hashley said that after four years of strong support, New Entry had just begun to positively transform agricultural practices and improve food system access for underserved and beginning farmers.
