Scott Brown, A81, was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on June 8 to be ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa by a 94-4 vote.

Brown, most recently a commentator on the Fox News network, was a senator from Massachusetts from 2010-2013. Prior to that, he was a state representative and then state senator, before running for and winning the Senate seat long held by Ted Kennedy.

Brown told a Tufts audience in 2015 that his political career was in many ways inspired by his time as an undergraduate on the Hill. A basketball player, he was also a member of the student senate and the jazz choir and had a lead role in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum at Balch Arena Theater.

“Tufts was the doorway into new cultures and experiences,” he said. “I came to understand and appreciate differences and the kinds of challenges all people face. This played a critical role in the man I am, the kind of person I am and the public servant I have been.”
