The ranking is based on innovative patents granted in the United States in 2020
Tufts is one of the top 100 universities around the world in U.S. patents granted for 2020, according to the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) and the Intellectual Property Owners Association (IPO).
The annual list of academic institutions that are granted so-called utility patents—those for new or improved products, processes, or machines—show the school’s innovative nature.
The NAI and IPO have released the top 100 ranking since 2013 to shed light on the impact of university patents. The information used for the ranking was compiled using information gathered by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
According to the rankings, Tufts University and Tufts Medical Center together accounted for 28 utility patents last year.
After being founded in 2010, the NAI has sought to spotlight inventors with patents in an effort to encourage the advancement of technology in academic institutions and the education and mentoring of innovative students.
The NAI is a member organization that works to enhance the visibility of academic technology and innovation and encourages the disclosure of intellectual property. It is comprised of U.S. and international universities and governmental and nonprofit research institutes, with more than 4,000 individual inventor members and fellows spanning more than 250 institutions.
The IPO is a trade association for owners of patents, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets, and advocates for effective and affordable intellectual property ownership rights.
