The Tufts Library has streaming music—from classical and jazz to songs from around the world—available for students, staff and faculty

Some people like to whistle while they work, but for others, listening to music is better than making it. Now there’s a new option for Tufts students, staff and faculty: streaming music from the Lilly Music Library. Need an afternoon boost? Charles Mingus’s bebop classic “Better Get It in Your Soul” is there waiting for you. Or are you in a mood for Bach? That’s on tap, too—in spades.

It's all part of a large collection of online streaming music sources available 24 hours a day to members of the Tufts community with a university login and password.

Actually, the program isn’t all that new, but it’s likely new to most of the Tufts community. Back in 2007, when the Perry and Marty Granoff Music Center was being built, Tufts’ extensive collection of CDs and LPs had to go into storage, although the music department still had curricular needs. The solution was to subscribe to a nascent streaming audio source, the Naxos Music Library, says Michael Rogan, head of the Lilly Music Library.

Since then, more sources have come online, and now Tufts has a wide range of music available for casual listening, as well as for its main purpose, the department’s “broad and eclectic music curriculum,” says Rogan.

And it’s not just audio. Video is also available through the site, including footage of classical music performances and master classes, dance productions and documentaries and 500 hours of opera performances.

If you’re into more traditional media, the Lilly Library, located  on the lower level of the Granoff Music Center, has thousands of albums available for checking out. “We have a huge CD collection, which was our primary resource for curricular support, and the students have always used that,” says Rogan. “They use them recreationally—we encourage that, too.”

To sample the offerings, go to the library’s Research Guides at Tufts: Music page, choose the streaming library you’re interested in, follow the links and play the music or watch the videos. Each source allows you to browse selections as well as search for a specific title, composer or performer.
