Launched, Part II: Stories of New Jumbos:

Eduardo Barrera, A19, Hails from Right Around the Corner

Story and Photos by Kelvin Ma

Tufts has long been known as an international university, in no small part thanks to a student body hailing from all corners of the globe. A more recent trend, however, has been the rise in the number of undergraduate students from its own backyard of Somerville, Massachusetts, which was recognized by Boston.com as having one of the top 15 high schools in Massachusetts. This year, Somerville sent five of their own up College Avenue, including Eduardo Barrera, A19.

Barrera’s family lives in a modest two-family home in Somerville’s Union Square neighborhood. A graduate of Somerville High School, he was president of the North Shore Science League, Math Club MVP and president of the Chess Club. This summer, when he wasn’t exploring the neighborhoods around the city with his friends, Eduardo interned at Raytheon, working on a team that is redesigning the defense contractor’s Patriot Missile system. He commuted by bus every day to the Raytheon facility in Tewksbury, Massachusetts.
