BOSTON (November 30, 2011) — In celebrating the Sharewood Project’s 15th anniversary, the Longwood Symphony Orchestra will perform a concert on December 3, 2011 at New England Conservatory. The Sharewood Project, a free health care organization run by medical students and faculty of Tufts University School of Medicine, has provided free care to uninsured and underserved patients from the Boston area since 1997.
“This concert celebrates the community that we work with and 15 years of providing free medical care services to residents of the greater Boston area,” said Stephen Sanoja, a second-year medical student at Tufts and administrative director of the Sharewood Project. “We are also celebrating all of the students, doctors, and community members who so generously donated their time to the Sharewood Project over the years.”
The Sharewood Project offers basic health care services including flu shots, vaccinations, counseling on sexually transmitted infection prevention and reproductive health, and insurance case management every Tuesday night in the basement of the First Church of Malden. The free health care organization also offers some specialized services such as eye exams and dental screenings. Student translators are often available for patients who speak Mandarin, Cantonese, Spanish, Creole, or Portuguese. The Sharewood Project gets its name from a variation on the Sherwood Forest in the story of Robin Hood.
“Over 15 years, our organization has developed and changed. We now work with students from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and Tufts University undergraduate schools, as well as students from The New England College of Optometry. In addition, we are now able to sign patients up for MassHealth insurance when it is appropriate to do so,” said Tess Jasinski, a second-year medical student at Tufts and fundraising coordinator at Sharewood.
The Longwood Symphony Orchestra is made up of health care professionals from many of Boston’s hospitals and universities. Musicians include doctors, medical students, research scientists, nurses, therapists, and caregivers. Since 1991, the orchestra has presented public concerts at New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall. The concerts are held to raise money for health-related nonprofit organizations.
The Longwood Symphony Orchestra’s Healing Art of Music concert to celebrate the Sharewood Project will be held on December 3rd, at 8:00 PM in Jordan Hall at New England Conservatory in Boston, MA. Acclaimed violinist Bella Hristova will perform works by Mendelssohn and Schumann under the baton of Edward Jones.
